Frédéric M Profile

Biologist, entomologist, outdoor enthusiast, scuba-diver, birder and traveler from Québec interested in discovering the world and its wonders! I did my first oversea backpacking trip in 2018 following my master and I don't want to stop any time soon. I am mostly interested in ecology, national parks and thus natural WHS, but being a WHS hunter opens my mind to architecture, history of art, urban planning, industrial heritage and the epic history of the World!

Paraty and Ilha Grande

Frédéric M Canada - 16-Aug-24

Paraty and Ilha Grande

I visited Paraty and Ilha Grande in March 2024, en route between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The Costa Verde bus first took me from Rio to Conceição de Jacareí. From there, numerous excursion boats and water taxis leave for Ilha Grande at a frequency and schedule that eluded me. I had to wait just over an hour and a half for mine to fill up and we finally set sail for a short 15-minute crossing. I got off at Abraão, where I spent the night. As the weather was grey and gloomy, I gave up the beach visits and snorkelling excursions in favour of hiking. From the western end of the beach, a path leads to the Cachoeira da Feiticeira waterfall

Lenggong Valley

Lenggong Valley

I visited Lenggong Valley in March 2023. In planning my trip, I contacted the guides and resources mentioned in previous reviews on this page. However, given the excessively high cost charged by the only guide who replied to me, I chose to go on my own. So here are the instructions for visiting these caves without a guide, permits or car hire.

I started my day in Georgetown, from where I took the ferry and train to [...]

Niah Caves

Niah Caves

In her review, Randi explains that she visited Niah during the same year as Els, so their visits are very similar. In my case, I visited Niah the day after Els' visit! We even had dinner together in Miri and I was able to benefit from her advice following her visit. My account will therefore also be very similar to hers, but my appreciation of the site differs greatly.

Like Els, I travelled to the park by bus. However, unlike her visit, cabs were waiting for tourists at the junction in my case, and a driver found me before I even started looking for him. The return journey was equally straightforward, with a bus waiting at the junction when the driver called by the receptionist dropped me off. After registering, I crossed the river by boat and began my visit to the museum. The museum is informative, but not particularly well presented. There's little structure between the many panels, some are redundant and most seem to have been created by students with no sense of synthesis. Artifacts are unfortunately few and far between

On March 21, 2024, while visiting Rio de Janeiro, I received an e-mail from the Canadian Abroad Warning System. It warned me that a major storm would hit Rio the next day, that it was best to stay indoors, and that I should follow the advice of the local authorities. However, it didn't teach me anything, since the Cariocas were on the alert and I had already been warned of the impending arrival of this depression. I had even listened to the news with my host, which was broadcasting hurricane-like images and announcing power outages, flooded villages and missing persons in the southern sectors already hit.

Seaflower Marine Protected Area (T)

I visited San Andrés Island in February 2024 during my trip to Colombia. I spent four nights there. After the arrival day (from Cartagena), the next three were scheduled for scuba diving. I flied back to the continent to Medellín.

For my first day of scuba diving, following the recommendation of a diver I met in Cartagena, I opted for Sharky Diving
